U14/15G Red Champs at Reddan Thunder
The U14/15 Girls Red, coached by Baz Greenaway, produced an amazing comeback despite being hampered by injuries and brutal temperatures that reached the mid 90s to clinch the 2017 Reddan Thunder Invitational championship in Verona on June 3 & 4.
The girls started with a comfortable 2-0 win over KASA Avalanche thanks to goals from Morgan Rubelowski and Sarah Wegener. They then ran into a very strong Madison 56ers outfit and were beaten 0-3.
On Sunday, after going a goal down to Inter Northshore FC, the girls were seemingly heading home early, but they stormed back to win 4-1 thanks to goals from Val Wallace (2), Brooke Robinson and Sarah Wegener to clinch a wild-card semi-final spot and a repeat showdown with 56ers.
A brilliantly disciplined defensive performance resulted in a 0-0 draw and the semi-final went to a penalty shootout. 56ers scored first and Sam August leveled. Morgan Rubelowski made it 2-2 and Sarah Wegener scored to make it 3-3. Keeper Kaelyn Stephenson then brilliantly saved 56ers’ fourth penalty. Brooke Robinson made it 4-3 and with the score then tied at 4-4, Val Wallace stepped up to bury the fifth spot kick for a memorable victory and sparked joyous celebrations among the girls on the pitch and the parents on the touchline.
The girls then met QC United Panthers from Iowa in the championship final and triumphed 3-0 thanks to a superb hat-trick from Brooke Robinson.
A memorable weekend and a great triumph over adversity for the girls, all of whom showed an incredible will and desire to win.
COYR is used as an abbreviation of ‘Come On You Reds’, and football teams that play in red in England will have this chanted by their fans; our British coach has adopted the cheer for his PSU Team.
